William Somerville, 1st Lord Somerville was born before 1400.1 He was the son of Sir Thomas de Somerville and Janet Stewart.1 He married Janet Mowat, daughter of Sir John Mowat, in 1428/29 in a secret marriage, against his parent's wishes. He died on 20 August 1456 at Cowthally Castle, Lanarkshire, Scotland, from a surfeit of fruit.1
He gained the title of 1st Lord Somerville [Scotland] between 28 June 1445 and 3 July 1445.2

.... The charter is dated at Edinburgh, the day of __ 1447. Likewayes in the same year, the first of October, the Lord Somervill contracts his eldest daughter Marie, efter oune mother, upon Ralph Weir, and gives in portione with her two thousand merkes, payable at four termes; for the payment of this soume, he binds himself, his eldest sone, John Barrone of Carnwath, John Lockhart of Cloghorne, and John Chancellor of Scheill-hill. Three years therefter, he marryes his youngest daughter Janet upon James Cleilland, sone and heir to William Cleilland of that ilk.

In March 1478 his widow Janet, Lady Craigmillar sued John, Lord Somerville, for goods and silverware which belonged to her by right of terce.
