Notes about William Wesley Henley

Received 12 March 1997, from Nancy Henley Rice, the following
information. It appears quoted from another source : Melva (last name
and relationship unknown) [MLW].
----------Q U O T E------------------------------------
The Henley Crest consists of: An
eagle with wings displayed and holding an anchor in the claw and a three
leafed figure in the beak. The Henley name dates from 1217 [a squiggly
mark follows this date - MLW]. The name means beauty, hero, or warrior.
The dictionary of English and Welsh surnames indicates that the Henley
ancestors lived in and around Oxford, Warneck, and Suffolk, all cities in
England. I got this information from Mary [there is no last name given -
MLW]. If you find anything more please let me know. I didn't have
positive information except from your letters. I'm sending these to
you....Melva. [I continue -- MLW 970315] The grandparents of John W.
Henley came to America: Teenagers, met, discussed the topic a ship
sailing from America was on the high seas bearing products they hadn't
seen in England or Ireland, the land the girl had been born in. They
climbed a tree every day to see the mast appear on the horizon. After
two weeks passed, excitement roused thier adrenal veins. They rushed to
tell their friends but didn't reveal their secret. After the ship was
ashore every one talking and buying thier wares the young couple hid on
board. [Note: there are many grammatical errors w/in this writing -- MLW]
When all was in readiness the captain commanded ropes be cut, soon they
were sailing to the land they had heard as much about. A few days passed
before they ventured out of hiding -- too late to turn back. They were
initiated on their first job. They cleaned, scrubbed and if they hadn't
been brave and venturesome they could have cried. But no, they would
grow up fast! The long trip, though rough sometimes when Rebekah was so
sick William would comfort her. Then to their surprise they were bonded
out to work for this man to pay their fare. [Note: the time period of
this incident I should think to be circa 1840/50; and Indentureship
should have been a thing of the past. Hence, I suspect this an
anachronism. Furthermore, the death certificate of John William Henley
lists his parents names as John Wesley Henley and Rebecca Holt. MLW]
They met one Sunday morning and planned to run away the next Sunday
morning. Which they did. They ran to the wilderness then hid til
nightfall. For several days they kept this up then they came to a white
settlement and friendly indians. They found someone to marry them. Soon
they were told beyond the river was a better way. Then they started out,
walked west and used the canoe William had made with the neighborly help
of their indian friends. Of course Ill. [sic -MLW] was the end of their
long journey. Here their 2 sons and a daughter were born. People were
floating logs down to New Orleans. William went on a trip which took a
year to get there, trade the logs for molasses fruits and barrels of
fish. When everyone was ready they started home which took more than a
year to fight the current and bad weather. Rebekah, frightened and lonely
would go out at dusk and watch for William to return. Two years had
passed. She put the children to bed, took her vigil in hand. She saw a
man coming down the road. She watched his [undeciperable -- MLW] was
coming nearer but didn't arrive. Morning came. She walked a mile to the
nearest neighbor who had been a true friend begging her to come down to
their house to live while her husband was away. As they wen they saw an
old snag, a tree which had lost it limbs. She knew this was the man she
had watched but she accepted the invitation anyway. [ ??? -- MLW.] In a
few weeks her husbnand came with food, material for her and the children
some clothes which she made by hand. Although a happy reunion took place
neither ever thought of another trip to New Orleans. When their children
grew up one boy went down to Ky. The other went on West. They never met
again. This story has been told and retold from one generation to the
next. -----------U N Q U O T E -----------------------
