Présente à Ransart depuis plusieurs générations, la famille Delhaize est traditionnellement occupée dans le domaine du négoce. Ainsi, Jean-Jacques Delhaize tient-il commerce à la fois en vins et en charbon. Il mène son activité de manière traditionnelle pour nourrir une famille nombreuse comprenant neuf garçons et deux filles, nés de son mariage avec Joséphine Ponsart (1806-1893). Les affaires prospèrent suffisamment pour permettre d’offrir une formation aux garçons qui le souhaitent : ils seront professeurs – sciences commerciales, latin, français –, surveillant-éducateur, médecin-vétérinaire, voire militaire. Lorsqu’il décède en 1857, le père Jean-Jacques Delhaize est loin d’imaginer de la destinée de ses enfants. En s’illustrant principalement dans le commerce, ils vont être les fondateurs du groupe multinational Delhaize Le Lion, et des chaînes de distribution Louis Delhaize et AD Delhaize. L’exemple paternel inspire en effet Jules (1829-1896), Auguste (1838-1895), Louis (1833-1897), Édouard (1835-1888) et Adolphe (1840-1899), tous impliqués dans l’émergence d’un nouveau modèle de la distribution alimentaire moderne et de ses multiples diversifications.
