Notes about Geike Janssen Dike Johnson Bonk

Geihe Johnson Bonk was born in Simonville, Germany. At the age of sixteen he decided to come to America. He found passage on a sailship which took about three months during which time they encountered very bad weather that forced the ship into a very dangerous area of ice bergs. Rations became very low and they were forced to only one meal per day for the rest of the journey.
After arriving at New York City he travelled on to Rockford, Illinois where he had an uncle and where he stayed until in 1860 at the age of 20 he married Catherine Bleeker.
The following year, in 1861, he enlisted in the Northern Army of the Civil War. He was assigned to the 34th Infantry, Company F. He participated in many battles such as Shilo, the siege od Corinth, battle at Murfeesbourgh, battles at Jonesburg and Atlanta. His last battle was at Bentonville April 19, 1865. Two weeks later he was mustered out at Grand Detour, Illinois.
He went to work at the John Deere Plow Factory for a time. I have found no date as to when he took his wife and family west and settled on a farm in Grundy County, Iowa. In 1876 his wife Catherine died and left him with seven children living and one dead. We have the names of only six as follows: Elizabeth married a Mr. Brinkema; Jenny married a Mr. Hassebrook; Etta married a Mr. Hassebrook; Grace married a Mr. Wassel; John; Catherine married John Letcher a brother to Fannie Luttje.
In 1978 Geike married Fannie Luttje a sister to George, John, Joseph, and Eveline. Children of Evert and Geeske Luttje. Geihe and Fannie stayed on the farm until 1880 when they moved to Webster, Iowa. They stayed there until the fall of that year and then moved to Lennox, South Dakota. In the fall of 1882 they moved and took up a homestead near Emery, South Dakota. They stayed on the homestead for eleven years, then moved again to another farm at the edge of town where they lived until he passed away with a stroke in 1910.Fannie bore Geike eleven children. In essence Geike fathered nineteen children.
It should be noted that Fannie was married before her brother George, therefore her last name was never changed to Letcher.
In bits of information from relatives it indicated that after Geike Johnson died sometime later Fannie was married and divorced. I was never able to verify this information.
