Biographical Summary:

John Pratt, an original proprietor of Hartford; his home-lot in 1639 was on the west side of Main St., and he purchased a lot belonging to Governor Haynes, adjoining his own, so that his possessions extended from what is now the north corner of Asylum St. to the Melodeon building, and Pratt St. received its name because it was opened through land belonging to his descendants; townsman, 1654. He died 1655; will, dated October 20, 1654, names wife Elizabeth, and sons John and Daniel; inventory July 15, 1655, £515. 2. 6.
Children:

i. John, married Hannah, daughter of James Boosy, of Wetherefield; freeman, 1657; constable, 1670; he had a second wife, Hepzibah, who married (2) John Sadd, of Hartford. His will is dated April 9, 1687; died November 23, 1687; names wife, sons Joseph and Jonathan, and 5 daughters.

ii. Daniel, Hartford; freeman, 1656-7; married and had 8 children; will, dated April 19, 1690, names 7 daughters and son Daniel. He was buried April 24, 1691.

The Pratt Family; or the Descendants of Lieut. William Pratt, one of the First Settlers of Hartford and Say-Brook, with Genealogical Notes of John Pratt, of Hartford; Peter Pratt, of Lyme; John Pratt (taylor), of Say-Brook. by REV. F. W. It will be of course agreed that any genealogical work by the author of the Chapman Genealogy will be a full and careful register of all the facts accessible at this day. Accordingly we find nothing to do but to praise that portion of the book which treats of the history of the family in New England. From p. 53 to p. 306, we have an exhaustive collection of the facts relating to, the descendants of William Pratt, of Hartford, who married Elizabeth, daughter of John Clark, and niece of George Clark, of Great Mundon, in Hertfordshire. They had eight children, all of whom married, and their issue is traced in separate chapters. First we have the Backus family, descended from the oldest daughter ; then the issue of John and Joseph Pratt ; then the Watrous family ; then those descended from William and Samuel Pratt; then the Kirtlands ; and lastly the issue of Nathanael Pratt.
John Pratt, also of Hartford, is presumed to be a brother of William, and the author has made large collections of his family. The others, Peter and John, are only slightly mentioned.
The least satisfactory part of the book is the attempt to identify the father of the emigrant. It is clear that the Rev. William Pratt, of Stevenago, in Hertfordshire, had three sons, John, William and Richard, of whom John was born in 1620. It is also clear that John, William and Elizabeth are not named in their father's will ; but why

we should presume that they were in New England, rather than dead, we do not see. We cannot see the slightest ground for the supposition, and trust if any proofs remain they will be furnished us.
Our comparison of dates strengthens our view. John Pratt, supposed in this pedigree to have been born in 1620, represented Hartford in 1639. Is it probable that a youth of 19 years held this position ? Again, his grandson was born in 1658 ; i. e., he was a grandfather at the age of 38. This is not impossible, but it seems unusual.

Born by about 1608, based on estimated date of marriage. Came to Massachusetts Bay in 1633. First settled in Cambridge; moved to Hartford in 1636. Died in Hartford 8 July 1655 (inventory). (Manwaring gives the death date as 15 July 1655, seemingly quoting the inventory, but the original clearly gives the death a week earlier) Married by about 1633, Elizabeth _____, who was living when he made his will, but does not appear in the probate of the estate. More than a century ago Rev. Frederick W. Chapman proposed that John Pratt was brother of William Pratt of Saybrook, and that John and William were sons of Rev. William Pratt of Stevenage, Hertfordshire. Many later genealogists have rejected this identification, noting that the baptismal dates given for the supposed brothers were too late for the Connecticut settlers, and that John and William were not proven to be brothers. Matthew Grow has recently reviewed the history of this problem and reexamined the Stevenage parish register, and has shown that the sons of Rev. William Pratt were born more than a decade earlier than had been thought, thus relieving the chronological objection to the identification. The evidence, however, is as yet insufficient to show that John and William Pratt were brothers, or that they were the two sons of Rev. William Pratt by those names.
