John L. Smith, was born 26 Oct 1810 , probably in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; he died of pneumonia on 10 Feb 1887 at his residence, 1928 Mervine Street in Philadelphia and was buried 14 Feb 1887 in West Laurel Hill Cemetery, near Philadelphia in Bala Cynwyd, Montgomery County, PA. Little is known about his parents and ancestry, but the 1880 census does list the birthplace of his father as Scotland and of his mother as New Jersey. We also know he had a brother William B. Smith, who lived next door to him in 1850 and with whom he was involved in buying and selling land. About 1829 John married Eliza Johnson, who was born 20 Sep 1813 , probably in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She died 1 May 1895 in Philadelphia and was buried 4 May 1895 beside her husband in the West Laurel Hill Cemetery. Her maiden name was listed on the death certificate of her son Charles J. Smith.

John and Eliza lived most of their lives in Philadelphia with their nine children. However, in 1857 John moved his wife and unmarried children to Cecil County, Maryland, where he bought a farm of 111 acres at Cherry Hill, near Elkton, where they lived until some time before 1880 when they were again in Philadelphia.
