Na zijn huwelijk met Folkje Bosgra vestigde hij zich aan de Noordersingel in Burgum en startte een eigen bedrijf in het vervaardigen van lijkkisten.

Na het overlijden van Folkje hertrouwde Wouter met Wytske Jansma.
Zij werden het eerste directeursechtpaar van het pas gebouwde verzorgingshuis "Eeburght" in Bergum. Toen een aantal jaren later in Hardegarijp – op initiatief van een aantal diakoniën – verzorgingshuis "Bennema State" werd gebouwd, werden ze daar het directeursechtpaar. Wouter overleed in Hardegarijp, Tietjerksteradeel in 1961.
