Hij erfde Cloetinge van zijn broer Reinoud en volgde in 1620 zijn broer Walraven op als 16e heer van Brederode, heer van Vianen, Ameide en Noordeloos.
Hij werd in 1623 kolonel en chef van het nieuw opgericht regiment Brederode, was gouverneur van 's-Hertogenbosch 1630-1655, werd 3 juni 1636 meester-generaal van de artillerie en volgde in 1642 zijn zwager Willemvan Nassau-Siegen op als veldmaarschalk van het Staatse leger.
Hij liet ca1625 het kasteelcomplex Batestein uitbreiden en legde een bijzondere tuin aan tussen kasteel en buitengracht van Vianen (zie prent van Hugo Allaerdt, 1632).
