    De Burgerlijke Stand - het door de overheid registreren van geboorte, huwelijk en overlijden - begon in Engeland en Wales op 1 juli 1837.Lokale registratie districten hadden de jurisdictie om burgerlijke gebeurtenissen te registreren maar zij waren verplicht om elk kwartaal kopieën van hun gegevens door te zenden naar het algemene registratie bureau (General Register Office of GRO) in Londen. De GRO maakte indexen voor deze records die zijn gerangschikt op gebeurtenis, jaar, kwartaal en vervolgens alfabetisch gesorteerd op achternaam.

    De index bevat de naam van de bruid of bruidegom, het district waar de registratie plaatsvond en referentie informatie (boek- en paginanummers). Bruiden en bruidegommen zijn beiden in de index opgenomen, maar zijn afzonderlijk vermeld onder hun eigen persoonlijke inschrijvingen.

    Met de gegevens uit de index kan, tegen betaling, een kopie van de huwelijksakte van de persoon worden opgevraagd bij de GRO via hun Certificate Ordering Service. Afhankelijk van het jaar kunnen volledige huwelijksakten het volgende vermelden: huwelijksdatum en -plaats, de namen van bruid en bruidegom, hun leeftijden, huwelijkse staat, beroepen en woonplaatsen. Informatie over de vaders van bruid en bruidegom—namen, beroepen,in leven of overleden—kan ook zijn opgenomen. Een huwelijksrecord geeft over het algemeen aan of de huwelijksceremonie plaatsvond in een kerk en indien dit het geval was, de geloofsrichting.

    Voor de jaren waarvan beelden van de index beschikbaar zijn, is het raadzaam om de verkregen informatie ook visueel te verifiëren. Het komt voor dat er fouten gemaakt worden bij de transcriptie. Een "5" wordt bijvoorbeeld onbedoeld overgenomen als een "3". Aangezien het opvragen van kopieën een betaalde dienst is, is het speciaal belangrijk om vast te stellen data alle referentienummers correct zijn alvorens een bestelling te plaatsen

    Tip: Als een persoon meerdere voornamen had, werden daar soms maar een of twee van opgenomen in de index. Bovendien werden soms ook alleen de initialen gebruikt voor de voornamen. Als u moeite heeft om iemand in de index te vinden, gebruik dan bij het zoeken eens andere voornamen, initialen of roepnamen van de persoon.
