Anna was the daughter of Count http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_of_Stolberg">Henry of Stolberg (1509-1572) and his wife, Elisabeth of Gleichen (died 1578).

Anna III was elected to succeed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elisabeth_II,_Abbess_of_Quedlinburg">Elisabeth II, Abbess of Quedlinburg. The election of the new princess-abbess was confirmed by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudolf_II,_Holy_Roman_Emperor">Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. She frequently confronted Quedlinburg city council and the city patron, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_I,_Elector_of_Saxony">Christian I, Elector of Saxony, and appealed to the Emperor for support.

Elector Christian I died in 1591 and was succeeded by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_I,_Elector_of_Saxony">Elector Christian II under the regency of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_William_I,_Duke_of_Saxe-Weimar">Frederick William I, Duke of Saxe-Weimar. The Princess-Abbess selected http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Anne_Margaret_of_Brunswick-Harburg&action=edit&redlink=1">Anne Margaret of Brunswick-Harburg as her coadjutrix but the Duke of Saxe-Weimar refused to consent as he wanted his own sister, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria,_Abbess_of_Quedlinburg">Maria, to succeed Anna III.

Anna III died suddeny aged 36 after a walk. The official cause of her death was stroke. She was succeeded by her enemy's sister.
