In 1464 werd hij hertog van Lüneburg, in opvolging van zijn kinderloos overleden broer, maar Otto stierf al enkele jaren later. Hij werd opgevolgd door zijn vader, die zich al in 1457 in een klooster had teruggetrokken. Otto's oudste zoon Hendrik was nog maar een kleuter.
