Als hij werkzaamheden verricht aan de vuile dakgoot van zijn huis aan de Westerdam in Midsland op Terschelling, glijdt de ladder weg en valt hij naar beneden. Mijn moeder rent verschrikt naar buiten en hurkt bij hem neer. Het is snel duidelijk dat de dokter moet komen. De dokter onderzoekt mijn lijkbleke vader, kijkt heel bedenkelijk en zegt dan met ernstige stem: ‘Ik bel de ziekenauto!’
Ondertussen worden andere instanties snel gebeld voor vervoer naar het ziekenhuis aan de wal.
De ambulance snelt met gillende sirene naar het strand om daar mijn pa over te zetten in het vliegtuigje ‘de Beaver’ om dan naar het ziekenhuis in Leeuwarden te vliegen.
De dokter houdt constant de boel in de gaten… Helaas is het te laat en pa overlijdt jammerlijk op het strand, zijn strand waar hij in zijn leven zo vaak kwam. Lange jaren heeft hij op alle zeeën gevaren en het einde van zijn leven eindigt met een laatste zucht zo dicht bij zee.
