Toen Andries Hondema en Elisabeth Renema pas getrouwd waren, woonden ze bij de molen bij de stenen man te Harlingen. Ze waren nog niet zolang getrouwd, dat het op een zaterdagavond heel slecht weer was met storm en regen. Ze durfden niet thuis te blijven, waren bang (voor een geest). Zij namen “het fetpantsje” met vlees en jus tussen hun in en vluchten naar grootmoeke. Die woonde in 't Hofke in Harlingen.
Het gezin behoorde tot de Nederlands-Hervormde kerk.
Andries is jarenlang meesterknecht geweest op de houtzaagmolen 'De Fortuin'. Knecht op de molen was toen Mark Abma. Nadat de familie de molen had verlaten zijn ze gaan wonen op de Lanen, in de woning boven de daar gevestigde schoenwinkel van Klaas Hondema.
