Notes about Cornelis Jansz Haringa

In 1720 stond er nog maar 1 huis. In 1725 woonde er alleen 's zomers een boer met zijn gezin. In 1794 stond er geen boerderij meer op Griend. Op de kaart van Peereboom uit 1796 staat aangegeven dat het eiland nog circa 25 hectare groot is. In 1800 werd het gras nog regelmatig verpacht o.a. van 1806-1811 aan Reinder C. Doeksen van Kaart op Terschelling voor 11 gulden per jaar, terwijl er 's zomers ook nog schapen naar toegebracht werden.
Van 1870-1876 werd het alleen nog bewoond door de familie Haringa van West-Terschelling. Nadat de familie Haringa in 1876 weer naar Terschelling teruggekeerd was, gingen vader en zoon Haringa weer terug naar Griend op 31 januari 1877 om het vee op te halen. Ze werden hierbij overvallen door een storm en omdat de zee het eiland overspoelde vluchtten ze in 1 van de drie kapen, die ten behoeve van de scheepvaart op Griend waren geplaatst. Juist die kaap brak af en beiden verdronken. Nadien werd er alleen nog gehooid en wat kleinvee geweid.

De zoon, die met vader is verdronken, is Cornelis Jansz Haringa, geboren op 19-02-1858 te Makkum.
