Major William Cadogan (1601–1661), of https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Liscarton&action=edit&redlink=1">Liscarton, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/County_Meath">County Meath, was born at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunster">Dunster, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somerset">Somerset, to Henry Cadogan of Llanbetter, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pembrokeshire">Pembrokeshire. His great-grandfather, Thomas Cadogan, of Dunster, claimed descent from the ancient princes of Wales (called Cadwgan). He was the father of the Dublin barrister https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Cadogan">Henry Cadogan and the grandfather of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Cadogan,_1st_Earl_Cadogan">William Cadogan, 1st Earl Cadogan.

He served as MP for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monaghan_Borough_(Parliament_of_Ireland_constituency)">Monaghan Borough from 1639 to 1649 and was a cavalry major in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Cromwell">Oliver Cromwell's army. In 1649, he ordered the destruction of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trim,_County_Meath">Trim's old Augustinian abbey's belfry, known as the Yellow Steeple, as it had been used as a watch-tower by the Catholic rebels. As a reward for defending https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trim_Castle">Trim Castle, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/County_Meath">County Meath, during the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_Civil_War">English Civil War and for putting down revolts around https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dublin">Dublin, he was given the governorship of Trim Castle. In 1658 he was appointed https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Sheriff_of_Meath">High Sheriff of Meath.

He died in Dublin on 14 March 1661. He had married Elizabeth Roberts and had a son Henry.
