Zo werd hij in 1757 lid van de Dordtse achtraad, in 1761 van de oudraad, was vanaf 1762 meermaals schepen, sinds 1764 enkele malen weesmeester, vanaf 1766 veertigraad en in 1783 en 1784 burgemeester van Dordrecht, tevens gedeputeerde in de Staten van Holland en West-Friesland. In 1771 werd hij bewindhebber van de Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie namens Dordrecht, in 1783 directeur van de Levantse Handel op de Maze en van 1791 tot 1805 was hij provoost.
