In 1445 kreeg hij van zijn vader in https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apanage">apanage het graafschap Genève toegewezen.
Op 14 december 1444 werd hij in het https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stirling_Castle">Stirling Castle verloofd met Annabella (1436-1509), de jongste dochter van koning https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacobus_I_van_Schotland">Jacobus I van Schotland. Het huwelijk vond echter nooit plaats wegens het verzet van koning https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karel_VII_van_Frankrijk">Karel VII van Frankrijk en in 1456 werd de verloving verbroken.
Op 7 oktober 1458 huwde Lodewijk met zijn nicht, koningin https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlotte_van_Cyprus">Charlotte van Cyprus (1444-1487). Het huwelijk bleef kinderloos. Door het huwelijk werd Lodewijk koning van Cyprus en tevens titulair koning van https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koninkrijk_Jeruzalem">Jeruzalem en https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cilicisch-Armeni%C3%AB">Cilicisch-Armenië, waardoor hij afstand deed van het graafschap Genève. In 1460 werd Charlotte afgezet als koningin door https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacobus_II_van_Cyprus">Jacobus II, de buitenechtelijke zoon van Charlottes vader https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_II_van_Cyprus">Jan II.
Na hun afzetting probeerde Lodewijk het graafschap Genève weer te verwerven, dat in 1460 naar zijn jongere broer https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_van_Gen%C3%A8ve_(1440-1491)">Jan was gegaan. Dit mislukte echter.
In april 1482 stierf Lodewijk in de priorij van Ripaille.
