Op reis in ballast van Le Havre naar Barry in charter van een buitenlandse maatschappij voer de HILVERSUM vanaf Wight zonder escorte toen men op 24 juni 1917 des middags te 15.00 uur plotseling een drijvende mijn zag en bijna op hetzelfde ogenblik had een hevige ontploffing plaats aan het achterschip. De HILVERSUM voer toen in het Bristol Channel op 5 mijl ten oosten van Lundy Island. Het schip zonk zo snel, dat de beide te water gelaten reddingsboten kantelden door de zuiging van de HILVERSUM. Een boot wist men weder op te richten, waarmede een aantal leden der bemanning veilig aan boord van het Britse patrouillevaartuig H.M.S. Night Hawk wisten te komen. Van de 19 leden der bemanning bleven echter 6 man, waaronder de gezagvoerder, vermist. De HILVERSUM was op een door de Duitse onderzeeboot UC.51 gelegde mijn gelopen.
