He was educated at Harrow School, Harrow on the Hill, London, England. He gained the rank of Major in the service of the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry (Territorial Army). He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches. He was decorated with the award of Territorial Decoration (T.D.). He was decorated with the award of Knight Commander, Order of George I of Greece. He fought in the Second World War between 1939 and 1942. He succeeded to the title of 3rd Viscount Long, of Wraxall, co. Wilts [U.K., 1921] on 23 September 1944. He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Wiltshire. He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Wiltshire in 1946.
