In datzelfde jaar riep hij, samen met zijn vader en oudere broer (https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Emanuel_van_Saksen">Maria Emanuel) het kapittel van de Saksische https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Militaire_Orde_van_Sint-Hendrik">Militaire Orde van Sint-Hendrik opnieuw bijeen. Aan de universiteit van München stond hij aan de basis van het Instituut voor Saksische Geschiedenis. Hij schreef tal van werken over de geschiedenis van Saksen. Pas in https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/1982">1982 kreeg hij van de regering van de https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duitse_Democratische_Republiek">DDR voor het eerst toestemming om zijn vaderland te bezoeken.
