18 januari 2012 ging Arend met zijn echtgenote op vakantie naar Indonesië. Zij waren voornemens daar tot april 2012 te blijven. Als eerste werd Bali bezocht. Eenmaal terug in Djakarta werd Arend ziek. In de nacht van 22/23 februari 2012 bleek Arend een agressieve darminfectie te hebben, hij kreeg een maagbloeding. Er is nog geprobeerd Arend te reanimeren, maar dit mocht niet baten. Zijn echtgenote Marie was aan zijn sterfbed aanwezig. Het stoffelijk overschot is naar Nederland - Wageningen overgebracht. De twee oudste kinderen reisden naar Indonesië ter ondersteuning van hun moeder. Op 28 februari 2012 te 06.00 uur terug in Nederland/Schiphol. Tegen de middag kwam de kist in het rouwcentrum in Wageningen aan. Vrijdagavond 2 maart was er gelegenheid tot condoleren in het rouwcentrum. De uitvaart vond plaats op 3 maart te Wageningen.
Oorzaak: Maagbloeding, overleed in de ochtend te Djakarta.

Daarna diverse baantjes in de handel en fabrieken te Veenendaal, Rhenen en bij het Gouvernement van Nederlands Nieuw Guinea tot 1962. Vervolgens te Wageningen als beheerder werkzaam geweest bij een vakgroep van de Landbouwuniversiteit tot zijn pensioen.
