Ging korte tijd naar het klein seminarie in Zenderen, daarna naar de kweekschool in 's Hertogenbosch. Daar zakte hij voor zijn examen, maar in 1934 kreeg hij toch zijn diploma in Zwolle. Daarna moest hij de deur uit en vond onderdak bij broer Gerard in Groningen. Daar slaagde hij in 1935 voor het examen handenarbeid. Hij zat in de oorlog ondergedoken en werd daarna o.a. leraar aan de ambachtsschool te Gorredijk en hoofd van de lagere school te Stolwijk, hoofd van de VGLO-school te Krimpen aan de Lek en tenslotte Apeldoorn. In Deventer bouwde hij een zeilboot in de achtertuin van zijn schoonmoeder. Toen de boot klaar was, stuurde hij zijn schoonmoeder de stad in, zodat ze niet hoefde te zien hoe hij het raam in de voorgevel er uit haalde om de boot door het huis naar de straat te krijgen. Een volgende boot bouwde hij op zolder in de Potterstraat, maar daar lukte het niet om de boot er af te krijgen.
