Jan Ploeg was schipper en voer op Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Haarlem en Dordrecht. Hij was voor zijn huwelijk reiziger en kwam met paard en wagen de klanten bezoeken vanuit Alkmaar. Is daar "onder de waarheid" gekomen, want was bij christelijke mensen in huis.

Het varen zat hem in zijn bloed, want zijn eigen vader was kapitein op een zeilschip en voer naar de Oostzeelanden met hout. Als jongen van 10 jaar voer Jan Ploeg mee naar Italië en kon zeggen "Ik heb Rome gezien" (maar geen paus).
