Zij krijgt verkering met Gerrit en in 1848 heeft het stel al trouwplannen, er zijn echter nogal wat ambtelijke obstakels te overwinnen. Zij dient, aangezien nog minderjarig, naast de gebruikelijke geboorteakte, en overlijdensakten van haar ouders, ook die van haar grootouders te overleggen. Aangezien haar opa Mijndert de Bruijn verdween in 1813 was er een rechtelijke uitspraak nodig m.b.t. het onvermogen van Maria om gegevens t.a.v. haar opa aan te leveren. Behalve dat is Maria Elisabeth ook nog onvermogend tot het betalen van een som van zes gulden en achtenvijftig cent nodig voor de akten. Pas op 31 mei 1850 is alles rond en gaan ze in ondertrouw.

Gerrit wordt geboren als 3e kind van de vijf, in de Boeresteeg nr. 2. De drie eerstgeboren kinderen worden bij het huwelijk erkend. Zijn vader was visverkoper en kruier, en verdiende daarmee zo weinig dat het gezin in aanmerking komt voor de zgn. Huiszittenhuizen (Armenzorg voor hen die in een eigen (huur)woning woonden) zij ontvingen vanaf 1830 tot en met 1839 bedeling in de vorm van turf. Deze 9 jaar zat zijn vader in dienst, zo lezen we in het Bedelingsboek.

Gerrit wordt ingeschreven bij de Nationale Militie, en is ingelijfd geworden bij het 2e Regiment Infanterie. Op het certificaat staat zijn signalement en de notitie dat Gerrit heeft verklaard, niet te kunnen lezen.
Gerrit had een ovaal gezicht, glad voorhoofd en spitse neus. Bruine ogen en bruin haar.
