Onder talrijke blijken van belangstelling heeft gisteren de heer J.Fortgens den dag herdacht, waarop hij een kwart eeuw geleden door de Utrechtsche Zendingsvereeniging werd geordend als zendeling, leeraar en afgevaardigde naar Halmaheira.
Daar was hij enkele jaren werkzaam op Sendagale op de West-kunst. Vervolgens nam hij den Zendingspost Tabela op de Oostkust waar. Daarna stichtte hij den zendingspost Djadolo op de Westkust.
In 1920 moest de heer Fortgens repatrieeren wegens gezondheidsredenen en in 1923 werd hij benoemd tot directeur van het internaat van de Ned. Zendingsschool te Oegstgeest.
