    Gerrit werd in 1880 gekeurd voor de militaire dienst, toen nog de Nationale Militie genoemd. Hij werd vrijgesteld van dienst wegens zijn lichaamslengte: hij was "te kort", "te klein" of "verre beneden de maat" met zijn 1 meter 54 centimeter. Zijn signalement luidde: Aangezicht: ovaal; voorhoofd: gewoon; ogen: blauw; neus, mond en kin: ordinair, dus ook gewoon. Zijn haar en wenkbrauwen waren blond. Speciale kentekenen had hij niet, maar volgens zijn zoons had hij een uitzonderlijk zwaarbehaard lichaam.

    Gerrit heeft in verschillende rangen op diverse vissersschepen gevaren. Zo was hij in 1878 en 1879 "Spillooper" op de logger "De Plaats Royaal". In januari 1880 ”wandstaander" op hetzelfde schip. In november van dat jaar werd hij "stuurmansmaat" op het schip "Zeenymph". In 1881 in die funktie weer op "De Plaats Royaal". In 1884 en 1885 en van 1887 tot en met 1890 voer hij als stuurman op het schip "De Noord". Van 1891 tot en met 1896 was hij schipper op "De IJssel" en vervolgens van 1897 tot en met 1902 schipper op de "Hendrik". Omdat het schipper zijn volgens één van zijn dochters het ene jaar beloond werd met een varken (er was dan goed verdiend) en het andere jaar "met een schop onder je kont" (er was dan weinig verdiend), kon een schipper naar een lagere funktie terug worden gezet en zo werd Gerrit in 1904 stuurman op de VL 156 "Koningin Emma". De schipper van die logger was Arie Storm, een familielid van Gerrit 's vrouw en die schipper voelde zich om die reden min of meer verplicht Gerrit als stuurman aan te nemen. (De vader van één van de latere schoondochters van Gerrit kreeg daarom nul op het rekest toen hij Arie Storm vroeg of hij stuurman bij hem kon worden: "ik zit ommers altijd met familie, Kees", kreeg hij van Storm te horen).

    Gerrit bleef stuurman op de VL 156 tot en met 1907. In 1909 werd hij stuurman op de VL 16 "Voorloper" en in 1914 stapte hij in die funktie over op de VL 97 "Prinses Juliana”, waarop hij tot 1916 bleef varen. In 1917 ging hij weer met dat schip mee, maar nu als matroos. In 1918 in die funktie op de VL 121 "Friesland” en in 1919 op de VL 196 ”Johanna”. In 1920 werd hij nog eenmaal stuurman en wel op de VL 114 "Voorlichter”. Daarna heeft hij niet meer gevaren, maar hij heeft nog tot zijn 74e jaar gefungeerd als "waker” over de vissersschepen in de Vlaardingse haven.

    Met zijn vrouw en twaalf kinderen woonde Gerrit in het uiterst kleine woninkje Schoolstraat 13 te Vlaardingen. Hoe klein het was (en ook hoe klein hij was!) wordt geïllustreerd door het feit dat hij wel eens over de tafel, tussen de borden door liep om een paar herriemakende kinderen aan het andere eind van de tafel een draai om de oren te geven. Ondanks de minimale woonruimte, (het huisje was 4,5 meter en gedeeltelijk slechts 3,5 meter breed, 8 meter diep en zo'n 7 meter hoog onder het hoogste punt van het schuine dak), werd er toch nog een kamertje aan een vrouw verhuurd, en heeft Gerrit 's oudste zoon langer dan een jaar in de huiskamer ziek gelegen. En dat terwijl Willem en Alida samen in het veel ruimere huis ernaast woonden!

    Gerrit en Jaan, die "Dolerend" waren, komen uit de verhalen naar voren als een gezellig echtpaar, waar veel mee gelachen kon worden. Gerrit was driftig, maar kon de mensen waar hij mee om ging veel plezier bezorgen met zijn streken. Jaan was een vrouw die veel wijze spreekwoorden te berde bracht, zoals "Het is lauw waar het nimmer waait", daarmee doelend op een huwelijk waarin nooit eens een fikse ruzie voorkomt. Goedgeefs waren ze ook: als één van de zoons van de visserij thuis kwam dan werd er steevast een biefstukje bezorgd.

    Gerrit stierf in 1940 een nogal schielijke dood, met, naar de overlevering wil, een duidelijke afwijzing van ene Adolf nog op de lippen. Jaan stierf daarentegen een stille dood: zij werd door een beroerte getroffen en kon de laatste drie weken van haar leven niet meer spreken.
