    Het Binnengasthuis (ziekenhuis) was in de 19e eeuw berucht om zijn deplorabele toestanden. In 1867 schreven de regenten van het Binnengasthuis een rapport aan het stadsbestuur, waarin ze de afdeling verloskunde beschreven: "Zwangere vrouwen moeten haar dag- en nachtverblijf houden op sombere zolders. De verpleegkamers zijn op een andere verdieping gelegen dan de verloskamers, zodat de kraamvrouwen dadelijk na de bevalling een zeer moeilijke en nadelige verplaatsing moeten ondergaan.... En de verloskamers zijn in een bouwvallig, slecht ingericht houten gebouw, dat bovendien te klein is om aan alle behoeften te voldoen".

    The situation in the 19th century.
    The Binnengasthuis (hospital) was notorious for its deplorable conditions. In 1867 the Regents of the Binnengasthuis wrote a report to the City Council, in which they described the obstetrics ward: "pregnant women should keep her day and night stay on gloomy attics. The nursing rooms are located on a different floor than the delivery rooms, so that the maternity women immediately after childbirth a very difficult and adverse movement. ... And the delivery rooms in a dilapidated, poorly decorated wooden building, which is too small to meet all needs ".
