Emond Smeets ist der Sohn von Pilgram Schmitz und Nölken Heinkens. 1728 verlor er seine Eltern und zog mit seiner Schwester Christina nach Heerlen.
Er heiratete in Heerlen Anna Elisabeth Kreijten, Tochter von Hendrik und Helena Gelissen. Auch Schwiegersohn Hans Vrolings wird und Nicolaas Hersseler werden als Mittäter genannt. Nach seiner Heirat trat Edmond in die Staatsarmee von 1746 bis 1752 als Kavallerist ein. Nach mehr als sechseinhalb Jahre in Amsterdam kehrt Er zurück zu seiner Frau. Ab Mai 1773 wurde er von Gefangenen aus Heerlen als Komplize von Diebstähle und Raubüberfällen genannt. Außerdem prüfte das Gericht ob Er beim Stadtbrand von Valkenburg beteiligt war. Man lässt ihn öffentlich vorladen und verurteilt ihn in Abwesenheit. Als Emond im Herbst 1773 nach Hause zurückkehrt, hört er von Freunden, dass er verdächtigt wird Schuld am Brand von Valkenburg zu sein. Auf Anraten von Freunden macht er sich auf den Weg in das Land von Gulik. Als er 1777 in seine Heimat Heerlerheide zurückkehrt, wird er verhaftet. Das Rat prüft Alibis für den Zeitpunkt des Brandes glaubwürdig und wiederholt 1778 nur die Verurteilung zur Verbannung und entlässt ihn aus der Haft.
Emond starb am 11. Dez. 1780 in Brunssum; Anna Elisabeth Kreijten stirbt am 2. Februar. 1796 in Heerlen.
