Notes about Rosina Gesina Schulten

Obituary of Gesina Schulte Elfrink

Died, at Leopold, July 10, Grandma Elfrink, aged 72 years. She was the widow of John Herman Elfrink, who died over two years ago at the age of three score and ten years. This couple came to the United States from Prussia 43 years ago. After two years stay in Cincinnati, they came to Bollinger County. When the war broke out the, the German settlement being constantly infested with lawless bands of soldiers and others, they were forced to leave and went to a farm near the Cape, 4 years, when they returned to their home near this place, and where they resided until Uncle Herman died; then Grandma came to Leopold to live with her grandson Herman Elfrink who is conducting a saddlery business here.

The couple was blessed with 8 children; 3 sons and 5 daughters. Three of the daughters have previously died. Grandma has 5 children and 56 grandchildren with a host of relatives and friends to mourn her death. Grandma was living very happily here being near the Church where she could pay daily worship to the God Who had so blessed her and her beloved husband with a long and prosperous life and given them the strength and courage to overcome so much adversity, but the extreme heat of the past week proved too much for her aged and feeble body. She could truly depart this life without regrets as to the future of her children; having lived to see them all grown and to know that they were good, moral Christian men and women, possess both individually and collectively of the elements of success in this life not withstanding the circumstances under which Uncle Herman and Grandma were placed by leaving the land of their birth and winding their way across the ocean to a new country. They, by the proper application of those Christian and business principles which insure success under all circumstances, accumulated enough of this world’s goods to enable them to give each of their many children a start in life; and while they were busy accumulating this property they did not forget nor neglect the religious and business training of their children. Hence they infused into each of them both in this life and the life to come.

George J. Elfrink, the oldest son, owns and occupies the old homestead; he also owns another good farm with plenty of teams and machinery to operate the same. In addition to being a practical farmer, he is a safe business man and is the owner and proprietor of the blacksmith and wagon making business and a saddler and harness business, all of which is conducted in his own houses. He also owns two nice residential properties in Leopold and one in Lutesville. He has considerable money out among the people and now has a large herd of cattle for sale, so it can be seen that George is utilizing the good training of his deceased parents.

Henry Elfrink, than whom there is no better citizen living in Bollinger County, is broadminded, intellectual, kindhearted, public spirited and liberal. He carefully guards the interest of himself and his family, yet is charitable; being ever ready to contribute to the needs of the poor. Henry commenced in the woods, cleared his land, built a nice residence and out buildings, bought adjoining land, cleared it, and now has a large farm in a fine state of cultivation; has plenty of livestock and all machinery needed to operate his large farm. He has money at interest; hence he is following a course of training which leads him to let each day make him a wealthier, a wiser and better man.

Fritz Elfrink, the youngest son, is not physically as healthy and strong as the other boys, yet he displays the same traits of character. He is kind, affable, public spirited, energetic, and industrious. He owns two good farms with the teams, livestock, and machinery to operate them and he operates them to perfection. He has passed through his hard times; the children are getting up to help him. While he has not lived long enough to accomplish as much as the older boys, he is climbing up the ladder behind them and from now on the progress will be more rapid!

One of the daughters married Mr. Dorus Holzum and they live near her brothers where they own a good farm and plenty of stock and plenty of machinery to run it. Dorus is a hustler; he is in partnership with Henry Vonderin (VandeVen) and engaged in the wheat and clover threshing business. By the aid and counsel of his good wife they are building up in this life and rearing their children to walk in the straight path.

The other living daughter married a gentleman by the name of Schafer and lives in St. Louis. She came down to bid her mother a last farewell before she departed this life and remained over the funeral. She is a large, fine looking woman and has the appearance of being one of those kind hearted Christian women that any good parents might well feel proud of. Thus by the death of the last of these two good people we are reminded of what a life of energy, industry, economy, and Christian devotion may accomplish in this world.
