Notes about Gesina (Joanna) Elizabetham Holweg

Gesina Elizabeth, the only daughter of Jacob Holweg, was born May 19, 1858. She married John George Elfrink on October 13, 1875. George was born February 18, 1853, the son of John Herman and Gesina Schulte Elfrink.

George and Elizabeth had eleven children:
John Herman born August 19, 1876;
John Jacob born May 24, 1880;
Mary Elizabeth born October 2, 1882;
Bernard Gerard born January 15, 1885;
Alida Gesina born April 3, 1887, but died the same year;
Rosina Adelheid born April 12, 1888;
Aleida Anna born March 16, 1891;
Frederick William born February 11, 1894;
Anna Elizabeth born August 21, 1896;
Helena Aleida born August 14, 1899;
and Leo August born April 1, 1904.

Elizabeth was a petite lady with red hair. She will be remembered as wearing her hair in a long braid.

She and George entertained quite often in their home, inviting visiting priests or other members of the congregation to join the family for Sunday dinner following the morning Mass. As their children got older George and Elizabeth opened their home to the young people of the community for Sunday afternoon get-togethers. It is easily assumed their diligence in the raising of their youngsters in Christian attitudes greatly influenced the descendants who were to follow.

Elizabeth suffered a stroke one early summer afternoon as she was picking strawberries. It was her 61st birthday. Due to the stroke she was confined to a wheelchair for a number of years. She sat by the window of her home in Leopold waving to passersby. Elizabeth was unable to speak but communicated by hand motions. Even as she sat in her wheelchair, the twinkle of her eye was still very evident, as her love continued to be felt by her husband, children, and grandchildren. Elizabeth's grandchildren especially remember the basket of cookies that hung from the rafters at "Grandma's" house. Those were special cookies, always baked by, and given from, loving hands.

The entire Leopold community mourned the loss of this loved one on February 16, 1930, as Elizabeth quietly passed away. She was 72 years of age. With Elizabeth's death, the first generation of Holweg chilren reared in America ended.

George passed away eight years later on March 14, 1938, at 85 years of age. Both George and Elizabeth remained in the St. John's community during their lifetimes, and were buried in the Church cemetery, beside each other.
