Een opvallende groep waren de Duitsers, een vijfde van alle nieuwkomers in Amersfoort. Zij kwamen om diverse redenen naar Amersfoort. Sommigen hadden economische redenen en vonden hier meer werk en hoger loon. Anderen waren op de vlucht voor oorlog en religieuze onderdrukking. Ze kwamen veelal uit Noordrijn-Westfalen en Nedersaksen en waren textielen metaalbewerkers en militairen. Een bekende Amerfoortse familie van Duitse afkomst was de familie Thiens. Zij kwamen uit Aken en via Dordrecht in Amersfoort terecht. Ze waren koperslagers en economisch en politiek zeer invloedrijk. In het midden van de 17de eeuw kwamen bombazijnwerkers uit Aken, Bremen en Hamburg in de Amersfoortse textielnijverheid werken.
