Notes about Johannes Hessel de Jong

Johannes Hessel de Jong leidt vanaf 13 maart 1858 alleen de firma Douwe Egberts, zij het met financiële steun van o.a. enkele familieleden. Het devies wat Johannes Hessel later zijn zoons voortdurend voorhield, was: "Zorg altijd, dat ge goede waar levert, dan houdt ge klanten. Bent ge eens te duur, dan koopen ze voor een keer wel eens bij een ander, maar dan komen ze wel terug."
In de nacht van 14 op 15 oktober 1881 woedt een grote brand in de Midstraat in Joure. In totaal gaan 14 woningen, winkels en bedrijfspanden verloren, waaronder ook het woonhuis, de net nieuwe tabakskerverij, het koffiepakhuis, de koffiebranderij en flinke voorraden tabak, koffie en kandij van Johannes Hessel. Ook vrijwel het gehele familie-archief gaat verloren. Gelukkig voor het bedrijf was Johannes Hessel goed verzekerd, en kan al enkele weken na de brand een deel van het werk hervat worden.
Na tweemaal uit een huwelijk weduwnaar te zijn geworden, wordt Johannes Hessel op 29-06-1883 in ondertrouw opgenomen met Petronella Maria Ledel. Het huwelijk wordt vastgesteld op 13 juli d.a.v.. Maar Johannes Hessel wordt op 8 juli ernstig ziek, en hij sterft op 18 juli 1883. Het derde huwelijk heeft niet plaatsgevonden. Wel blijft Petronella Ledel nog enkele jaren bij beide kinderen. Bovendien werd Alexander Brenninkmeijer, een broer van Johannes Hessel's tweede vrouw, voogd over de kinderen.
(Petronella Maria Ledel, dochter van een apotheker(?), ligt begraven op het R.K.Kerkhof in Kuinre).
