Notes about Jacob Martens Molenaar

Jacob was in Enkhuizen kastelein van de herberg "Het Sneeker Veerhuijs" en als garbuleur (kruidenlezer) in dienst bij de Enkhuizer kamer van de "Vereenigde OostIndische Compagnie" (V.O.C.). In die functie was hij verantwoordelijk voor het uit- en inpakken van de specerijen in het Peperhuis. Hij inspecteerde, sorteerde, deed de administratie van de voorraden en hield toezicht op de sjouwers. Als de retourvloot uit Azië op de rede van Texel was aangekomen, werd de lading onder toezicht van de garbuleurs overgeladen naar kleinere schepen die de haven van Enkhuizen konden binnenlopen. Een garbuleur werkte onder toezicht van de pakhuismeester. Hij had een beëdigde functie en moest een paar honderd gulden borg betalen toen hij bij de VOC in dienst trad, want de baan was fraudegevoelig. Het loon was toen ongeveer 18 stuivers per dag.
