Kees in 1866 als zouaaf naar Rome geweest. Zouaven waren jonge vrijwilligers, die in de tijd van de Italiaanse eenwording (grofweg tussen 1860 en 1870) naar Rome trokken om zich in te zetten voor de verdediging van de Vaticaanse Staat.
Kees bleef ongehuwd.

Zouaven: Drie gebroeders Zwarthoed Kees Klaas en Evert grootgebracht in
het weeshuis in Edam en zij leerden daar ook een vak. Klaas werd
timmerman, Evert werd kuiper. Kees en Klaas waren de eerste
Volendaqmmers die in mei 1866 naar Rome gingen; Klaas zelfs in de rang van
korporaal. Hun broer Evert volgde in januari 1868, tegelijk met Jan
Kwakman (Pokkie).
