Terwijl Karel de Grote in Noord-Spanje op veldtocht was, beviel zijn vrouw Hildegard, hetzij op 11 april, hetzij in juni/augustus 778 in de palts van Chasseneuil bij Poitiers van een tweeling. Na Karels terugkeer werden ze als Lodewijk en Lothar gedoopt. De Karolingische koningsnamen Karel, Karloman en Pepijn waren reeds aan Karels eerder geboren zonen vergeven, zodat men besloot terug te grijpen naar deze van de belangrijkste Merovingische koningen Chlodowech I oftewel Clovis, en Chlotarius I. De kleine Lothar stierf reeds in 779, maar Lodewijk overleefde.
