Notes about Piccarda Bueri

Zij was de dochter van Edoardo Bueri, een lid van een familie van oud geslacht uit Florence met economische belangen in andere steden. Toen ze geboren werd in de eerste helft van de veertiende eeuw, leefde de familie in Verona. Terug in Florence trouwde ze met de jonge bankier Giovanni di Bicci in 1386.

Zij stond bekend om haar schoonheid, maar haar man was bekend voor zijn lelijkheid. Het huwelijk bracht respect en aanzien aan Giovanni en hun kinderen, want hij was niet van adellijke afkomst. Vlak voordat hij stierf, vroeg hij haar om te zorgen voor hun kinderen. Ze werd begraven met hem na haar dood in de oude sacristie van San Lorenzo.

Carlo Marsuppini schreef een lofrede, waarin hij de liefde tussen Piccarda en Giovanni vergeleek met die van beroemde koppels uit de oudheid. Hij vergeleek haar met Penelope , Artemisia II , Julia Caesaris en Porcia Catonis .
