Alphonsus was landbouwer en woonde te Hontenisse en Stoppeldijk.
De boerderij waar Alphonsus de Maat voorheen boerde stond tot circa 1931 ongeveer 500 meter zuidelijker, tegen de Cambronse kreek aan.
In de week van Allerzielen gaan wij een goed mens begraven. Op de dag waarop wij in verbondenheid met elkaar het feest van Allerheiligen vierden ging hij op hoge leeftijd van ons hen. Het is voor ons bij alle droefheid en troost te weten dat de heiligen klaar stonden om hem op te nemen. Hij was immers een mens die het altijd op prijs stelde te leven met de mensen hier op aarde en met hen die ook nog bij ons horen na hun dood. Hij zal zich thuisvoelen in de gemeenschap van de heiligen.
Zijn leven werd getekend door eenvoud en goedheid. Het stond op de basis van een echt overtuigd geloof. Zijn vast geloof kon bij hem uiten in begrip en mildheid voor de medemens. Het is dan ook geen wonder dat hij uitermate gezien en geliefd was bij zijn familie en bij allen die hem kenden.
Dat hij ruste in vrede.
Hij is overleden in huize "St. Anthonius" te Kloosterzande.
