Ik ben dankbaar voor alle goede en slechte ervaringen die me hebben gevormd. Dankbaar voor alles wat ik heb meegemaakt in dit leven. "Eric Verberne schreef deze afscheidstekst voordat hij op 3 april overleed. De Nederlands Kampioen Afvallenis maar 51 jaar geworden. De doodsoorzaak is onbekend.
"Hij is rustig in het ziekenhuis ingeslapen", zegt zijn broer Rudi. De laatste maanden leefde Verberne puur op wilskracht. In 2008 woog hij nog 300 kilo. Daarna viel hij 180 kilo af tot 120 kilo. Maar dit jaar woog hij alweer 175 kilo. Broer Rudi:Dergelijke bewegingen houdt geen lichaam vol. Hij paste ook niet goed op zichzelf. Hij was obisitascoach en alleen met zijn klanten bezig."
Eric Verberne heeft veel betekend voor dikke mensen in Nederland. Hij was een voorvechter van de rechten van homoseksuele mannen met overgewicht. Veelvuldig trad hij op in de media als dikke mensen werden gediscrimineerd. Zo kwam hij in actie toensportscholen besloten veel te dikke mensen te weigeren.
Verberne werd geboren als tweede kind van een ambtenaar uit het Zeeuwse Sint Jansteen. Op jonge leeftijd verhuisde het gezin naar Amsterdam. Genetische aanleg voor zwaarlijvigheid had hij niet. Tijdens zijn tienerjaren was hij een gewone jongen die merkte dat hij homoseksuele gevoelens had. Na de middelbare school kreeg hij een baan op financiële afdelingen bij diverse bedrijven. Op zijn 23ste begon hij enorm veel frisdrank - vooral cola - te drinken. Hij werd te zwaar en reageerde daarop door nog meer cola te drinken en meer te eten. Hij werd eetverslaafd. Een lunch was voor hem twwalf frikandellen speciaal, twee broden, twee flessen cola, rijst en havermout.
In 1991 richtte hij een vereniging op onder de naam Dikke Maatjes, voor mannen die vielen op andere dikke mannen. Als gevolg van zijn overgewicht viel hij op zijn werk vaak in slaap. Uiteindelijk kon hij zijn gewone baan niet meer aanhouden en werd internetondernemer.

Zijn slaapprobleem verwerkte hij door nog meer te eten, waardoor hij vanaf 2000 aan bed was gekluisterd. Dat zou acht jaar duren. Hij verscheen in televisieshows, zoals de Schreeuw van de Leeuw. Hij werd zo zwaar dat de ambulancevervoerder geen geschikte auto kon vinden om hem naar een ziekenhuis te brengen. "U kunt beter een verhuisbedrijf bellen", kreeg hij toegebeten door de bemiddelaar, die eraan toevoegde: 'Maar wij vergoeden geen vrachtauto's.'
In 2008 was zijn gewicht boven de 300 kilo gekomen - een nationaal record, maar hij wilde er beslist niet mee in het Guinnes Book of Records. Uiteindeijk werd gekozen voor een maag-darmverkleining, waarbij zijn dunne darm naar 2 meter werd ingekort, gevolgd door een strikt dieet. Het proces werd gevolgd door een televisieploeg van Netwerk.
Uiteindelijk wist hij zijn gewicht teru te brengen naar 120 kilo, waarmee hij de titel Nederlands Kampioen Afvallen verdiende. Hij schreef een boek over afvalervaringen. Maar het handhaven van zijn gewicht was een probleem. 'Een voormalig alcoholist mag niet meer drinken, maar een verslaafde moet toch eten.' Zijn laatste kerstdiner bestond uit gevulde parelhoen, sauce Veronique, haricots verts, pommes noisette, noten-chocoladetaart en tutti frutti. Hij besefte toen al dat hij de strijd tegen de verslaving zou verliezen.
Op 15 april werd op de kop van het Java-eiland in Amsterdam, waar hij zo vaak kwam om uit te waaien en over het IJ te kijken, zijn leven door zijn vrienden herdacht met een lach en een traan.
