      La memoria del general Alfonso Jaramillo Restrepo llenaría muchas hojas si describiéramos sus grandes servicios al país. Inició desde los diez y nueve años su carrera militar en la Guerra de los Mil días y posteriormente participó en varias campañas militaresescalando todos los grados militares, y llenado una hoja de servicios sobresalientes. Llegó a la jefatura de la Gendarmería Nacional nombrado por el general Pedro Nel Ospina y luego fue nombrado ministro de Guerra donde desempeñó una labor de organización que fue reconocida por todos. Posteriormente fue ministro del presidente Carlos E. Restrepo. Una vez retirado del gobierno, viajó a Estados Unidos y allí formó una compañía naviera que funcionó en el río Magdalena, con socios nacionales y extranjeros. Fue diputado a la asamblea de Antioquia donde fue su presidente. Fue elegido como miembro del congreso nacional por el departamento de Caldas. En concepto de sus contemporáneos era la persona idónea para asumir la Presidencia de la República, pero murió repentinamente a los cuarenta y seis años en la hacienda Malachí en el municipio de Soacha, Cundinamarca, el 15 de abril de 1926. Sus funerales fueron oficiados por el arzobispo de Bogotá monseñor Ismael Perdomo y fueron presididos por el presidente de la República con todos los funcionarios del gobierno y autoridades del Congreso. En Sonsón se erigió un busto a su memoria en el parque Gregorio Gutiérrez Gonzalo y en el Centro de Historia está homenajeado su efigie.
