Jan van Egmond, werd een der eerste aanvoerders van de Kabeljauwen en bezocht als kruisridder de Heilige plaatsen. Hij volgde in 1483 zijn vader op als heer van Egmond en werd bij diploma van Maximiliaan te Brussel op 12 november 1486 verheven tot Eerste Graaf van Egmond. Hij was kamerheer van Maximiliaan in 1477, slotvoogd van Gorinchem in 1481. Van 1483 tot 1515 was hij stadhouder van Holland. Hij kocht in 1481 de heerlijkheid Purmerend, verwierf tevens Baer en Lathum, werd in 1491 ridder in de orde van het Gulden Vlies. In 1504 kocht hij de heerlijkheden Hoogwoude en Aertswoude. In 1481 was Manke Jan betrokken bij het beleg en de inname van Dordrecht (Hoekse en Kabeljauwse Twisten) Zie raam in de Grote Kerk Dordrecht. Hij streed tegen de laatste Hoeken en bracht hen in 1490 in het Gat van Brouwershaven een gevoelige nederlaag toe. In 1492 sloeg hij de opstand van het Kaas- en Broodvolk in Noord-Holland neer.
