Uncle Johnny died (age 20) of Pneumonia during the great influenza epidemic. He had been employed aboard a ferry traveling between Norfolk, VA and Cape Charles (on the Eastern shore of Virginia). I was told that having caught a severe cold (or the flu), he came home to Holland, Virginia, rented a horse for the trip out to the farm. The horse slipped on ice while crossing an earthern dam, throwing Johnnie into the mill pond, and, as a result caught pneumonia and died 6 days later.
