Notes about Philippe le Clercq

hij was secretaris van Breskens. In 1776 volgde hij bij commissie van 20 okt. 1776 Van Hierschot op als secretaris, toen deze tot bailliu van Breskens werd benoemd. Hij overleed te Groede op 9 dec. 1804. Nog onduidelijk is, of hij tot zijn overlijden secretaris van Breskens is gebleven
De secretaris vervulde in het dagelijks leven een belangrijke rol. Dat gold niet alleen in Breskens, maar in alle dorpen en steden. Hij legde in acten vast welke besluiten genomen waren, registreerde koop en verkoop, huwelijkscontracten, notuleerde de rechtszittingen en de vergaderingen van de magistraat enz. Een goed overzicht van zijn taken is te vinden in de in 1706 door de Vrijheer uitgevaardigde Instructie voor den secretaris. De aanleiding daartoe waren ongetwijfeld de problemen, die Eberhard von Danckelman ondervond met de door hem aangestelde secretarissen, al zal een deel van de problemen ook zijn ontstaan, doordat secretarissen werden aangesteld die weinig relatie hadden met Breskens.
