He obtained his doctorate in theology in Utrecht and became a minister in Durgerdam. From there he left for Grootebroek, then to Goes. He had only been active in the latter place for two years, when some disputes caused him to resign from his ministry and he left for Utrecht. In 1784 he was called there as a professor of theology. He was Rector Magnificus at the University of Utrecht in 1785 and 1786. In 1787, when the Prussians arrived, he was dismissed because of his patriotic feelings: he left Utrecht and settled in Durgerdam, later in Leiden, where, already a doctor of theology, he registered as a student again on March 31, 1789. , to acquire the privileges of the college and to secure the protection of its privileges.
