Notes about Maria Catrina Johanna Smalhoudt

From 1802 Maria Catharina Smalhoudt was as Mrs. Freubel actress at the Amsterdamse Schouwburg. She probably debuted as Joset, one of the two title roles of the comedy with singing, The Two Young Savojards, but it is unknown when that was. The Complete Almanach about the 1802/03 season does not list her among the debutants. According to the various episodes of the Almanach, Smalhoudt worked as a second soubrette (soprano) and as a 'dugazon' (second singer) in vocal pieces. She mainly played the part of a maidservant in comic operas and comedies – the most common soubrette role. According to one contemporary, she was "loved for her unsophisticated gaiety" and an admirer of hers, the drama critic and writer A.L. Barbaz, thought that the 'rogueness of her face' suited such a role well (Barbaz, Amstels Schouwtooneel 1, 111).
