They emigrated to the US in the spring of 1846.The following is stated in the Nieuwe Rotterdamse courant of Tuesday 26 January 1847
L. van den Houten, who used to live as a carpenter in Noordwelle, left for North America with his family in the spring of last year, settled in Albany and wrote a letter from there, dated 2 November 1846, to some dignitaries at Noordwelle, with a request not to publish it; only demanding that it be brought to the notice of the public that the people who travel to North America usually find themselves deceived! In the letter, the words that are important, especially in this present time, occur: "Dear friends! I advise you all who have your bread in Zeeland, to stay in your country. Just assure in my name that most will be deceived. who have come here. Whoever comes here well is happy. I still have my bread by the goodness of God, but many go from one place to another, suffering, and he who has money must still consume it in sorrow ."
