They emigrated to America in 1848. Missionary Theo van de Broek from Brabant founded a Catholic colony in Wisconsin in 1836: Little Chute. They were among the first major wave of emigrants to America.
They made the voyage aboard the barque Maria Magdalena, a ship under the command of Captain D. Smit. This bark left Hellevoetsluis on March 26 for New York, where the ship arrived on May 8, 1848.
They traveled on to the Little Chute colony in Wisconsin. The family had a very difficult start time there. There were problems with Indians and they had to build their own log cabin there.
