arriveer aan die Kaap op die Tidore in 1678, as adelborst, vanaf Liefkenshoek, Nederland. Hy het ontslag ontvang van die VOC op 11 Mei 1683. Hy was "n skoenmaker, getroud met MARYNA RAS, =23.6.1669 (Kaapstad), dogter van Hans Ras, van Angeln, en Catharina Ustinx, diehistories bekende Trijn Ras, uit Denemarke. Op 11 November 1714 tree hy weer in die huwelik met Susanna GROEN, weduwee van Jacobus Steen, van Delft. Joost se afkoms is onbekend, en deur sy assosiasiemet die Nederlandse bevolking aan die Kaap (deur byvoorbeeld getuie te wees by die doop van "n kind van die Steyn stamvader) word hy beskou as van Nederlandse afkoms. Die van (en variante) word egternie in 17e en 18e eeuse Nederland, Vlaandere, Duitsland, of Frankryk aangetref nie. Verwante name uit Poland (soos Strydomiu) dui op "n moontlike Poolse oorsprong, soos byvoorbeeld as vlugteling uit die 17e eeuse anti-Joodse pogromme in Poland.
