Catharina was said variously to be from Batavia, the Malabar Coast, Bengal and the Coromandel Coast. She may have been born in any of these locations, but more likely one of the latter three, and then brought to Batavia as a slave. She was said to be 36 years old at her baptism in 1673 and was therefor born circa 1637.1,2 Catharina van Malabar was baptized on 29 October 1673 Nederduitsch Gereformeerde Kerk, (Cape Town), de Caep de Goede Hoop.2
