Johannes (Jan) DE WAAL kom met die skip “Doornik” na die Kaap in 1715 in diens van H.O.I.K., kwartiermeester en later eerste koster van die Kaapse Kerk. Hy tree uit diens uit as "n baie welgestelde man. Hy besit baie huise ondere andere Jan de Waal huis in Breëstraat, Kaapstad, asook die huis waarin die Maleier museum in Waalstraat is. Waalstraat is ook na hom vernoem.

Jan Christoffel DE WAAL, [a1b2c7d1e9f4g1h1], * 19.05.1925, navorser van die DE WAAL familie, maak die volgende stelling: “Dit word aanvaar dat Jan se pa, Michiel de Waal, was. Ek trek die stelling in twyfel. Verder was die stamvader se naam nie Jan nie, maar wel Johannes. Let ook ophoe hy homself vernoem het en al sy kleinseuns was gedoop Johannes. Die konneksie met Michiel is veronderstel om te dui op die beroemde Michiel de Waal (Frans Hals-skildery). Die een persoon wat die skakel sou wees, Jan of Johan de Waal, van Haarlem, word vir hom en sy vrou aangegee in Amsterdam en Haarlem argiewe as “Kinderloos gesterf”. My “raai” is dat sy pa was Arnoldus of Arnt of Arend”
