Jan Janse VAN EEDEN was ook as Jan van Oldenburg bekend. Hy is in 1637 gebore en arriveer in 1662 aan die Kaap as onderscheepskorporaal. In Oktober 1671 trou hy met Lijsbeth JANSZ van Amsterdam. Van Eeden skei van haar en trou op 13 Julie 1688 met Maria ROUSSEAU, gebore in 1659 in Blois, Frankryk.

Die van Rousseau is soms ook as Rossouw, Russaar, Rossar en Rossaux geskryf. Sy was egter as Marie Rousseau, die suster van Pierre Rousseau, bekend. Later trou sy met Cornelis Joost van Dale.

Hy werk van 1671-1677 en 1682-1704 as "n smid. Jan het ook "n kneg, Bastiaan Cevael, gekry om sy kinders te onderrig en ook naaldwerk te doen. Hy dien ook as "n diaken van 1700-1701. In Maart 1677 het Jan en sy vrou Lysbeth Jansz na Europa teruggekeer omdat beide van hulle "n probleem gehad het met dronkenskap. In Mei 1684 het Jan op grond van owerspel van Lysbeth geskei. Toe Lysbeth in 1684 na die Kaap gekom het om haar by Van Eeden aan te sluit, het sy gedurendedie rit op die skip met die bottelier van die skip owerspel gepleeg en swanger geraak. In Desember 1684 is Lysbeth weens haar losbandige en sedelose lewe na die vrouetughuis in Batavia gestuur.
